It’s Available: Ivanti On-Demand Remote Control for macOS

Ivanti released this week an on-demand remote control tool for macOS and it works extremely well. The purpose of the on-demand remote control tool is to help administrators provide assistance to users on unmanaged Macs (managed Macs have had remote control capability for years).

While I believe having unmanaged Macs in an environment is a really bad idea, I do think this on-demand remote control tool has its merits. And, it is really easy to update your environment for the on-demand remote control capability (discussed at the end of the post) and even easier to use.

Any Mac running OS X 10.10 or greater, whether it be located inside or outside the company’s network, can be remote controlled. Let’s walk through the process in detail as there are two separate parts to a successful on-demand remote control session; the first part of which needs to be performed by the end user. The second part is performed by the remote control analyst.

End User

The end user needs to perform the following:

  1. Open a web browser on the Mac (running OS X 10.10 or greater).
  2. Enter the URL to the company CSA into the browser (ex. https://fullyqualifiedCSAName or https://publicCSAIPaddress).
  3. Click on the Cloud Services Appliance Utilities link.
  4. Download the RCClient.dmg file by clicking on the RCClient.dmg link in the Mac section.
  5. Double-click on the RCClient.dmg file (likely saved to the Downloads folder).
  6. From the mounted volume, double-click on the RCClient application.
  7. The CSA Name will automatically populate the CSA URL when launched from the mounted volume downloaded from the CSA. If the URL needs to be typed in, use the format of http://fullyqualifiedCSAName/client.
Remote Control Analyst

Once the end user completes their part, the remote control analyst does the following:

  1. Open a web browser on any machine with an HTML 5 compatible browser.
  2. Enter the URL https://fullyqualifiedCSAName/rc or https://publicCSAIPaddress/rc.
  3. Authenticate with a valid CSA account.

Note: Each remote control user will need to have an account created on the CSA (if accessing it from the CSA page) in order for them to successfully remote control machine off-network.

  1. Find your desired machine from the list and click the named hyperlink.
  2. Cancel out of any certificate prompts.
  3. Click the Login button (no authentication needed).
  4. Perform your Remote Control session.
Updating the Environment

The on-demand remote control requires a Cloud Service Appliance to be in place and it needs to be on build 183. Once patched to build 183, the on-demand Mac DMG will be available for download and the CSA will know how to broker the traffic when the RC Client is used.

  1. Log into your CSA with the URL https://fullyqualifiedCSAName/gsb or https://publicCSAIPaddress/gsb.
  2. Check your build version by clicking on the About button at the bottom left panel.  If it’s not on build 4.3.1-183 or greater, update the CSA.
  3. Click on the System menu button and then click on the Updates tab. From there, press the Scan for Updates button.
  4. Hit the Apply link when it returns with the update.
  5. Reboot the CSA by going to the Appliance tab and clicking the Reboot button.
